1. Jasprit Bumrah
India’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah has led the team in some unusual situations when regular captain Rohit Sharma was unavailable. He captained India in two of the five Test matches during a tour of Australia. Under his leadership, India secured a dramatic win in the Perth Test. However, Bumrah’s fitness could be a concern. Still, given his role as vice-captain, India might continue with him.
2. Shubman Gill
India might consider appointing Shubman Gill as the next Test captain. Gill is viewed as a future leader and has already captained India A in a few series. He is a confident batsman and has represented India in all formats. With an outstanding start to his international career and a successful stint as captain in IPL 2025, he stands a strong chance of becoming India’s next Test captain.
3. Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant is India’s top choice in the longer format. He is among the core leadership group and has already achieved a lot in his Test career. His batting has been key to many of India’s successes. As a wicketkeeper, he keeps a close watch on the field. Most importantly, his performances in SENA countries strengthen his claim to the Test captaincy. Given his stature in Test cricket, it wouldn’t be surprising if he becomes India’s next Test captain.
