IPL 2025: List of Teams Eliminated from the Playoffs Race

IPL 2025: List of Teams Eliminated from the Playoffs Race

Aviator: In IPL 2025, only four teams advance to the playoffs while the remaining six are eliminated. Sometimes, playoff spots are decided in the final league match, but other times earlier. Currently, five teams have already been knocked out of the playoffs race. Here is the list of those teams eliminated from the IPL 2025 playoffs contention.

Chennai Super Kings

IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings were the first team to be knocked out of the playoff race in IPL 2025. Led by the legendary MS Dhoni, CSK’s hopes ended following a crucial defeat against Punjab Kings. The match, which took place at their home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium, was a must-win for the Men in Yellow. However, they fell short after being bowled out for 190 runs in the first innings, thanks largely to a brilliant hat-trick by Punjab’s Yuzvendra Chahal. Despite a powerful innings of 88 runs by Sam Curran, CSK couldn’t defend their total.

Punjab Kings’ captain Shreyas Iyer, along with Prabhsimran Singh, both scored half-centuries, leading their team to a four-wicket victory. CSK had a dismal start to the season, winning only two of their first ten matches, earning just four points. Even if they had won all their remaining games, the maximum points they could have reached was 12—insufficient to qualify for the playoffs.

Aviator: Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals

Following Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals were the second team eliminated from playoff contention. Their exit came after a heavy loss at home against Mumbai Indians in the 50th game of the season. After winning the toss and choosing to field first, the Royals conceded a massive total of 217 runs for the loss of only two wickets. Their batting lineup crumbled under pressure, getting bowled out for just 117 runs and suffering a 100-run defeat.

In the first eleven matches, Rajasthan Royals managed only three wins, accumulating six points. With three games left in the season, even winning all their remaining fixtures would bring them only to a maximum of 12 points, which is not enough to secure a playoff spot.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Aviator: The third team to be eliminated from the playoff race was the 2024 IPL runners-up, Sunrisers Hyderabad. Their chances ended following a rain-affected home game against Delhi Capitals, which was abandoned without a result. Before the game, SRH were in a must-win situation to keep their playoff hopes alive. The washout resulted in them earning just one point from the fixture.

With three matches still to play, even if Sunrisers Hyderabad won all their remaining games, the highest points tally they could achieve was 13—falling short of what is typically needed to reach the playoffs.

Aviator: Kolkata Knight Riders

Aviator:

Next in line was the defending champion Kolkata Knight Riders. KKR’s playoff hopes were dashed after their away game against Royal Challengers Bangalore was also washed out due to rain. Much like Sunrisers Hyderabad, KKR entered the match needing a win to stay in the race. The abandoned match awarded them just one point.

With only one game remaining in the league stage, even a win in their final fixture would take KKR to a total of 14 points. Unfortunately, this would not be enough to progress to the playoff rounds.

Aviator: Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants became the fifth team eliminated from the IPL 2025 playoff race after their defeat at home against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 19. Before this crucial match, LSG stood seventh in the points table with five wins from eleven games. Their playoff hopes required them to win all three remaining matches.

Aviator: However, the loss to SRH left them with only two games left. Even if Lucknow won both of those matches, the maximum points they could reach was 14—still short of the required threshold to advance to the playoffs.
