The North American league has invested heavily in star players to boost its profile. Recently, MLS clubs have paid record transfer fees, shifting focus from signing only former European stars seeking big salaries to developing younger talent. While some teams still prioritize big-name signings, many now emphasize building squads around promising young players, signaling MLS’s evolving strategy.
Gonzalo Martinez – €14 million

Gonzalo ‘Pity’ Martinez was one of Atlanta United’s priciest signings, arriving from River Plate. Although his MLS stint lasted just 18 months, his quality was clear, highlighted by three appearances for Argentina. Before moving to Al-Nassr in 2020, where he later teamed up with Cristiano Ronaldo, Martinez made 54 appearances, scoring 11 goals and providing 14 assists. Atlanta profited by selling him for €16 million, and he has since returned to River Plate.
Thiago Almada – €14 million

Argentine talent Thiago Almada became one of the most expensive MLS signings when he joined Atlanta United in February 2022. In 83 appearances, the attacking midfielder and winger notched 26 goals and 24 assists. Almada was also part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad, playing briefly in Qatar. After a €19.5 million transfer to Botafogo, he went on loan to Lyon before moving to Atletico Madrid this season.
Kevin Denkey – €15 million

FC Cincinnati briefly set the MLS transfer record by paying €15.3 million to Cercle Brugge for striker Kevin Denkey. The dynamic forward, under contract until 2028, has been vital for the club and will need to maintain a strong scoring rate to justify his hefty price tag.
Emmanuel Latte Lath – €21 million

Atlanta United once again broke the MLS transfer record by signing center-forward Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough. Although 26 years old, the Ivory Coast international is relatively inexperienced, having spent much of his career on loan. After a solid two-year permanent spell at Middlesbrough, Atlanta invested heavily to bring him in this year.
Son Heung-min – €23 million

Son Heung-min’s transfer to Los Angeles FC set a new MLS record at €23 million, surpassing the previous high of €21 million paid by Atlanta United for Emmanuel Latte Lath. The deal, announced on Tuesday, marks the most expensive move in Major League Soccer history.
